Standardized testing is an extremely important part of any students educational endeavors. In today's society, standardized testing is still heavily weighted and relied upon in the academic world. Testing provides colleges with informative data on one's college readiness, student performance indications, and competetiveness among the national average student. College applications, entrance and acceptance rates are still highly competetive and test preparation provides one with the competetive edge in relation to the college admissions process. Being successful in relation to testing often leads to scholarships and helps one obtain the skills in order to meet state, local, and national standards. It also provides states, schools, and colleges with a common standard and even playing field for all students. Standardized testing and test preparation does have its place in our educational system, even though there are a multitude of important factors that have to be taken into consideration.
Test prep is one of the most effective methods in diagnosing a students strengths and weaknesses. They aid us in identifying when a student may or may not need help; adding extra challenges to gifted students. Sometimes we need to obtain help early on for struggling students so that every individual can be successful. They also provide insight for the teacher in relation to better facilitate more effective instructional methods in order to enhance student learning. Test preparation helps us predict success based on performance, employment, college readiness, scoring results, achievement, and in relation to acquiring scholarships. Test prep also helps improve achievement by making teachers strive higher for success and for students to continue to work that much harder in order to reach their goals.

Today, most professions have a content knowledge test and/or exam. According to the College Board, testing has climbed over the years. Many institutions and educators feel that these types of tests help us focus on the importance of developing basic skills that all students need to master. The National Association for College Admission Counseling has suggested that larger institutions are starting to consider test scores even more intensely with the amount of today's college applicants.
The U.S. Department of Education has found that the number of applicants per college has increased by a startling 60% over the years. Many factors contribute to academic and professional success, but many still hold testing to a high standard and/or in combination with these other factors that lead to achievement. 78% of colleges consider test scores to be considered extremely important in conjunction with GPA and transcripts.
A staggering 113 standardized local, state, and national tests are given by the time students graduate high school, 10 per year in elementary, and 20 per year in high school.
College entrance and admissions still rely heavily on such tests as the SAT/ACT exam. In order to be competitive, they want you to have competitive scores and to have been enrolled in a rigorous core curriculum school program. They feel that high school grades and the courses that you are enrolled into are just as important as your exam scores. Studies have illustrated that students that took at least a strong core curriculum, scored 143 points higher on the SAT. Over 1.65 million high school students took the SAT. Many schools also look at your success based on how you challenged yourself in school with AP Courses/Exams. Between 52-58% of college students graduated in four or fewer years based on their AP enrollment, and it increases up to as high as 71% based on the more courses a student took.
Research has also shown that 30 points may get you accepted past a college minimum score and a higher chance of obtaining an academic scholarship. Students whom scored in the 96th percentile on the PSAT qualified for a National Merit Scholarship.
College applications and students taking standardized tests continue to be on the rise. The top Ivy League Schools alone had an average of 20,000-42,000 applicants and only accepted between 2120-6234 student applicants. They have an acceptance rate of only 5.3-13.5%. Many of these schools have as low as a 5% acceptance rate, such as schools like Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Dartmouth, Columbia, Brown, UPenn, Stanford, Duke, MIT, Cornell, etc.
Research has shown that over the years, student SAT/ACT scores have decreased, suggesting that students are lacking in certain skills. These scores illustrate that students' scores in critical reading, math, science, english, and writing had diminished, and across other subject disciplines as well. As early as possible, students need to work on continously building on their academic foundation and explanding their knowledge across all discplines in order to achieve in todays educational platofrm.
